A terrific days diving was enjoyed by twelve of the Club's members who had traveled up to Mallaig on the Saturday, stayed overnight in local B & B's or camped and joined the Mary Doune and Skipper Andy Tibbetts at 9 am on the Sunday. After an uneventful passage the first dive was on an outstanding stepped reef on the south end of Hyskeir to the south west of Canna in the Inner Hebrides. The reef dropped in big steps from 15 metres to beyond 40 and is profusely covered in invert life. Shoals of fish abound.
It was as the first dive ended and some of the team were on the surface that they were visited by a large Basking Shark Cetorhinus  maximus  (Gunnerus, 1765). Douglas Potter was able to capture the two images below as the 5 metre long fish swam around.
The shark swims by eying up the divers.
On this pass the shark is feeding, straining plankton through it's gill rakers.
After this excitement lunch was taken on Hyskeir and more sharks were seen in the bay.

From L - R: Ian Whyte Sen., Betty Anthony, Ian Whyte Jun., James Anthony, Alistair Stewart, Gordon Young, Douglas Potter, Angela Smith, Anne Potter, Hazel Macfarlane.
Behind the camera: Steve McLaughlin. The second dive was made on the north end of Hyskeir and was equally wonderful with an eight metre deep cave penetrating 30 to 40 metres into the reef and wall dropping below, again with huge shoals of Mackerel and Pollack all around. The day ended back at Mallaig by 6 to pick up the cars and begin the long journey back to West Lothian.  Thanks Andy for a great day out - again!
